Being a Beacon for Jesus
We will be a church which is a beacon for Jesus
to the rural Axe Valley and beyond;
where the light and love of Jesus is visible and tangible;
where the light and truth of God’s Word is spread from here to the world.
We will live lives of worship to God.
We will offer a warm welcome and unconditional Christian love to all
We will help people grow as lifelong-disciples of Jesus.
We will base all our teaching and practice on the Word of God, the Bible.
We will bring glory to God by being a fruitful Spirit-filled church
We will make the rural community our priority as we spread the light of the gospel within and beyond the Axe Valley until Jesus returns
a church of about 95 members, with a congregation of around 150 people, from toddlers to over 90s. During the Covid lockdowns when our Sunday Worship Services were being Live-Streamed, we saw up to 400 devices joining our online services from all over the world. As a result we have seen people come back to faith and known of others to see answered prayers and encouragements.
Our leadership team is made up of a Pastor, a Church Secretary, a Church Treasurer and two Elders. We are also served by a Church Administrator. The Ministries of the church are co-ordinated by Ministry Team Leaders. Whatever we call ourselves in the leadership team, we work together to provide direction and oversight to the church. We believe strongly that all members and friends have gifts, both spiritual and natural, to be used in the work of the church, outreach, and building each other up and encourage everyone to be a part of a Ministry Team. We are all committed to our Vision and Values, believing God has called us to serve Him wherever we are.
that the church exists not just for the benefit of its members, but for non-members. We are committed to reaching out into our community with the good news, through various projects and activities, and social action. We seek to be relevant to our immediate community, and to be a relevant church in a rural area.
anyone to join us for our services and events, regardless of beliefs, politics, gender, age or sexuality. We share communion services every month, and our online services encourage people to take bread and wine or juice in their own home.
as members of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, and subscribe to its Declaration of Principle and we are also in membership with the Evangelical Alliance, and subscribe to its Statement of Faith. We have close relations with the local Anglican church, St. Giles, Kilmington engaging in regular joint activities and services with them. We are also in close fellowship with our “cluster” of neighbouring Baptist churches in Chard, Lyme Regis, Seaton, and Honiton - known as the “CHALKS” group, and we are members of Churches Together in Axminster (ACT). We have an open membership policy - that is, membership is open (in the words of our constitution) “to all who profess repentance towards God and faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, who have confessed their faith in one God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and whose lives bear evidence of their Christian profession.”
that the local church may always be "one generation away from extinction". Therefore, we are committed not just to surviving but to reaching out into our community with the good news, through various projects and activities, and social action. We seek to be relevant to our immediate community, and to be a relevant church in a rural area. The Arthur Rank Centre’s web site has more details on the churches’ ministry in rural areas, and helping churches to become more rural-friendly.
